Obituary

Phyllis Jane Bangart nee Wentland, 82, quietly passed away on January 1, 2019, in Glenview, IL, formerly of Morton Grove, IL. Phyllis was the beloved daughter of the late Ewald and Lois Wentland, grew up in Forest Park and attended Proviso East High School. Her favorite memories included childhood summers spent in Menominee, MI, with her grandmother and mischievous brother, Ed. Phyllis graduated from the Wesley-Passavant School of Nursing at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and received her BSN from the College of St. Francis. Initially, Phyllis enjoyed working as a nurse on the ATSF train travelling round-trip from Chicago to San Francisco every week. Shortly thereafter, Phyllis met Jim, her husband of 53 years, at a singles dance at the Drake Hotel. They married in 1960, and moved to Morton Grove, IL, where they raised their four children, Laura, Jill, Steven and Cynthia. Phyllis enjoyed a busy life working as a nurse within the hospital, as a nursing clinical instructor, volunteer for the Morton Grove Blood Donation Program, and as one of the first agency nurses. One of her favorite past-times was entering (and winning!) many sweepstakes and contests. Phyllis had Wally Phillips on speed-dial to answer his many trivia contests on WGN. Her kids hurriedly looked up the answers to the trivia questions while she dialed the rotary phone. In addition, Phyllis also worked as a travel agent and was fortunate to travel for both work and pleasure; with Portugal a favorite destination for both she and Jim. Phyllis was a garden tour guide and worked in the Children’s Garden as a 25-year volunteer at the Chicago Botanic Garden. As a Master Gardener, Phyllis grew many fruits, vegetables and herbs which were canned, jammed or stewed to sell at the Glenview Farmer’s Market. For many years, Phyllis shared her love of cooking and canning with her Adult Ed cooking students at the New Trier Extension program. As a devout Episcopalian, Phyllis provided 40 plus years of tireless service at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Glenview, IL. She changed hats many times over the years as she worked as President of the Episcopal Church Women’s Guild and the Vestry, worked evenings in the food pantry, and was the first female Lay Eucharistic Minister at St. David’s. Phyllis would light up a room when she entered and had boundless energy and ideas. Her effervescent and compassionate spirit will be missed by all. Phyllis is cherished and survived by her children, Laura, Jill (Robert) Moore and Cindy; her loving grandchildren Jessica, Kodie, Alex, and great-granddaughter, Evan. She is the dear and loving sister of Ed (Joan) Wentland and warm aunt to their children, Mark, Patrick, Ken, Judy and their families. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Jim, her son, Steve, and her parents, Lois and Ave Wentland.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January, 19, 2019, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 2410 Glenview Rd, Glenview, IL 60025. There will be lunch in the undercroft of the church following the service. In lieu of flowers please make a donation, in remembrance of Phyllis, to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
