Obituary

Paul Hopson, age 88, of Wheaton, IL and previously of Mobile, AL died Saturday August 3, 2019. He was born in 1930 in Stillwell, IL and grew up from the age of six in Springfield, IL. He attended Lamphier High School. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathryn, as well as his daughter, Jane Pelz, son-in-law, Jeff Pelz, his sister, Betty Chestnut of Lincoln, Illinois, grandchildren Saundra Vernon, Andrés Hopson, Sasha Sutton and Joshua Pelz. He also has numerous nieces and nephews as well as four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, brother and son, Todd Hopson.

Upon graduation from high school Paul began working the next day at Sangamon Electric Company. He soon enlisted in the US Navy with basic training in San Diego, California serving aboard the USS Washburn and later during the Korean war as a radioman aboard the USS Fechtler. Upon being honorably discharged Paul graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and went to work for Illinois Power Company. He and Kathryn were married in 1957 in Springfield, Illinois. They later lived, worked and retired from Madison, Wisconsin where he was with the CUNA Mutual Insurance Group as Director of Policyowner Relations and his wife Kathryn, a registered nurse with the State of Wisconsin. Paul and Kathryn moved to Mobile, Alabama in the mid 90’s where they spent 22 happy years. Paul was a lover of Jesus and is now at home with him. Funeral services will be held at College Church in Wheaton (Illinois) Saturday August 17 at 2pm. A burial service will be held 11am August 13 near Hillsboro, IL. A Celebration of Life will also be held at Christ Presbyterian Church (2131 Cody Rd) in Mobile, AL in September. Details can be obtained by calling the church at 251-633-2002.
